What is a tennis overgrip?
An overgrip is a thin, tacky wrap that goes over your racket's original grip. It gives you more hold and comfort, soaks up sweat and protects the grip underneath. It's cheap and meant to be changed often, so when it gets slippery or worn you simply unwrap it and put on a fresh one.
Overgrip or regular grip?
Every racket comes with a regular grip (also called a replacement grip): a thicker, cushioned wrap stuck to the handle. It sets the size and shape of your handle and only needs replacing occasionally.
An overgrip goes on top of it. It's much thinner, so it barely changes the size of your handle, and it isn't glued on, so it comes off in seconds.
- More hold: a fresh overgrip is tacky, so the racket doesn't twist in your hand.
- Drier hands: it soaks up sweat during long rallies.
- Protects your grip: the overgrip takes the wear, not the grip underneath.
- Makes it yours: a new colour is the quickest way to change the look of a racket.
How often should you change it?
Change it when it feels slippery, looks worn or shiny, or starts to smell. For players who play every week, that's often every few weeks; some players change it before every match. That's why overgrips come in packs.
How to put one on
- Take off the old overgrip if there is one. Leave the regular grip in place.
- Start at the bottom of the handle, by the butt cap, with the tapered end of the overgrip.
- Wrap up the handle, overlapping each turn slightly and keeping it pulled a little tight so it lies flat.
- Finish near the top of the handle, trim any extra and seal it with the finishing tape from the pack.

Questions people ask
What's the difference between an overgrip and a grip?
A regular grip is the thick, cushioned wrap stuck to the handle that comes with the racket. An overgrip is a thin, tacky wrap that goes over it and is changed often.
Do I need an overgrip?
Not strictly, but most regular players use one. It adds hold and comfort, soaks up sweat and protects the grip underneath.
How often should I change my overgrip?
When it feels slippery, looks worn or starts to smell. For weekly players that's often every few weeks.
Does an overgrip make the handle bigger?
Only slightly. Overgrips are thin, so most players don't notice a difference in size.
