What does a tennis dampener do?
A tennis dampener is a small piece of silicone or rubber that sits between your racket's strings. It soaks up some of the string vibration after each shot and cuts the high-pitched “ping” the strings make, so every hit feels and sounds a little more muted. That's all it does: it doesn't add power, spin or control.
What a dampener changes
Two things: feel and sound. Without a dampener, the strings keep buzzing for a moment after the ball leaves them. You hear that as a “ping” and feel it as a slight hum through the racket. A dampener stops the strings ringing, so you get a duller, cleaner “thud” instead.
What it doesn't change
- Power and spin. The effect on how fast or how much the ball spins off your strings is too small to notice.
- Arm comfort. A dampener calms the strings, not the frame. Most of the shock that travels up your arm comes through the frame, so a dampener isn't a fix for tennis elbow. If your arm hurts, look at your strings, tension and racket, and talk to a coach or physio.
Do you need one?
No, it's personal preference. Lots of players use one because they like the quieter, softer feel. Others prefer the feedback of the ping. A dampener costs a few pounds and takes ten seconds to fit or remove, so it's easy to try both and see which you prefer. Plenty of players also use one simply to make their racket look like theirs.
Where does it go?
Between two main strings (the ones running from handle to tip), just below the last cross string at the throat end of the racket. Our fitting guide walks through it, and that position is also what makes it legal in matches.
Button or worm?
There are two common styles. Button dampeners are a single piece that grips two strings, which is what most players use. Worm dampeners are a long strip woven across several strings. Court Gems dampeners are button-style: 3g of soft silicone in designs with a bit more personality.

Questions people ask
Does a tennis dampener reduce power?
No. Its effect on power is too small to notice. A dampener changes how a shot feels and sounds, not how fast the ball leaves the strings.
Does a dampener help with tennis elbow?
Not really. A dampener only quietens the strings, while most of the shock that reaches your arm comes through the frame. If your arm hurts, look at your strings, tension and racket, and speak to a coach or physio.
Can I use a dampener in matches?
Yes, as long as it sits outside the pattern of crossed strings, which in practice means below the last cross string. That's where dampeners normally go.
Will a dampener fit my racket?
Button-style dampeners like ours fit standard strung tennis rackets, adult and junior.
